How to write an Etsy title

Etsy lets a title run up to 140 characters. That is a maximum, not a target. A shorter title that reads cleanly is fine. Etsy's Seller Handbook post on listing titles (April 2026) points toward clarity and relevance, with other details going in tags, descriptions and attributes. Read it on Etsy's site, because Etsy can update it. We summarise it in Etsy's April 2026 title guidance.

A simple formula

  1. The item, in the words a buyer would type. Put it first and say it once.
  2. Two or three attributes a buyer filters by. Material, style, size or colour.
  3. Use or recipient, only if it's true and adds something. Leave the rest to your tags and description.

Before and after (fictional product)

Before:

Leather Card Holder Wallet Slim Minimalist Leather Wallet for Men Handmade Leather Cardholder Gift for Him Groomsman Gift

After (77 characters):

Slim Leather Card Holder, Full-Grain Minimalist Front Pocket Wallet, Handmade

The repeated "leather" and "wallet" are gone. The gift angles move into tags and the description.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Repeating the same word to catch more searches. It reads badly and adds little.
  • ALL CAPS and symbols. They make a title harder to read.
  • Other brands' names. Trademarked names in a title can get a listing taken down.
  • Cramming in occasions. "Christmas gift" in a title in October pushes out the words that say what the item is.
  • Claims you can't back up. Only state what is true.
