How to rewrite an Etsy listing description
Most weak descriptions fail in one of two ways: too little detail, or a wall of text. Here is a method that fixes both.
Last checked: October 2026.
Step by step
- List the facts first. Materials, size, colours, what's included, care, processing and shipping time, personalisation. Measure the item; don't guess.
- Write one opening sentence. What it is and who it's for, using the phrase a buyer would search.
- Add what makes it different. How you make it, why you chose the material, any honest limits (for example, colour varies slightly between batches).
- Put the details in a list. Buyers scan. Bullets beat paragraphs.
- Close with one line. Gift idea, how to order, or an invitation to message you.
- Cut filler. Delete "beautiful", "perfect", "great quality" unless you attach a fact.
Example (fictional product)
Before:
Candle. Smells nice. Great gift. Handmade with love.
After:
A hand-poured soy candle scented with lavender and cedar, for anyone who wants a calmer evening. Poured in small batches in an 8 oz amber jar.
- Wax: soy blend
- Size: 8 oz jar
- Burn time: about 40 hours (confirm with your own test)
- Ships within 2 business days
Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each burn.
The after version says what it is, who it's for and what to expect, using only facts the seller can check.
