Etsy title too long? How to shorten it

Etsy titles can be up to 140 characters, spaces included. That is a maximum, not a target. Etsy's Seller Handbook guidance on titles (April 2026) points sellers to clarity and relevance and suggests moving other key details into tags, descriptions and attributes. See what it says. If your title is over the limit, here is how to cut it without losing what matters.

Step by step

  1. Paste the title into a character counter so you know how far over you are.
  2. Underline the main phrase. This is what a buyer would most likely type to find the item, such as "leather card holder". Keep it at the start.
  3. Delete repeats. If "wallet" appears three times, keep it once.
  4. Cut filler words like "beautiful", "perfect" and "great quality". They take space and tell the buyer nothing.
  5. Move extra detail to tags and the description. Recipient and occasion phrases such as "gift for him" fit well as tags, and buyers read the rest in the description.
  6. Re-count. Stay at or under 140, and shorter is fine if it reads well.

Example (fictional product)

Too long (147 characters):

Leather Card Holder Wallet Slim Minimalist Leather Wallet for Men Handmade Leather Cardholder Gift for Him Groomsman Gift Front Pocket Wallet Brown

Shortened (77 characters):

Slim Leather Card Holder, Full-Grain Minimalist Front Pocket Wallet, Handmade

The repeats are gone. The gift angles move to tags, the colour moves to the description, and the main phrase is still first.

Don't

  • Cut the main phrase to save space
  • Replace words with other brands' trademarked names
  • Add claims you can't back up just to fill the characters
