Etsy's April 2026 title guidance: what it says and how to rewrite your titles

In April 2026 Etsy's Seller Handbook published "New Guidance for Listing Titles, and a Tool to Help". Read it yourself on Etsy's site, because Etsy can update it. As we read it, the message is simple: write titles for clarity and relevance, and move other key details into tags, descriptions and attributes.

What this means for your titles

  • State the item once. Say what it is in the words a buyer would type, and put that first.
  • Add only the details that help a buyer identify it: material, style, size or colour.
  • Move the rest. Recipient, occasion and extra style words can live in your 13 tags, your description and the listing attributes.
  • Treat 140 characters as a maximum, not a target. A shorter title that reads cleanly is fine.

What we couldn't confirm

Some third-party blogs quote a specific word count for titles, such as "under 15 words". We have not found that figure in Etsy's own guidance, so we don't repeat it as a rule. If you follow it, treat it as one blogger's advice.

Before and after (fictional product)

Before:

Leather Card Holder Wallet Slim Minimalist Leather Wallet for Men Handmade Leather Cardholder Gift for Him Groomsman Gift

After (77 characters):

Slim Leather Card Holder, Full-Grain Minimalist Front Pocket Wallet, Handmade

The repeated "leather" and "wallet" are gone. "Gift for him" and "groomsman gift" move to tags, and the description says who it suits.

A five-step rewrite

  1. Write down what the item is in the plainest words.
  2. Add the two or three attributes a buyer filters by.
  3. Read it aloud. Cut repeats and filler like "beautiful" or "perfect".
  4. Move recipient and occasion phrases to tags (tag limit guide).
  5. Check the length (too long? how to shorten).

Want it done for you?

The Listing Rewrite Pack writes the title, 13 tags and description for 5 of your listings from your own details, with the character count shown next to the title and every tag. It is AI-generated, so you review it before you publish. See a sample.
