Etsy tags for soap: a worked example of all 13

Soap is a crowded category, so your 13 tags have to do more than repeat "handmade soap". Each tag can be up to 20 characters including spaces. Etsy's rules and search change, so check Etsy's seller help pages for current limits. Nobody outside Etsy can promise a ranking, and we don't either.

The fictional product

A lavender and oatmeal cold process soap bar with shea butter, handmade in small batches, sold singly and as a 3-bar set. These details are made up for the example. Use only tags that are true of your own soap.

Tag 10 is 19 characters, and tag 12 is 18. Always recount any tag close to 20.

Why these 13

Product type and method: handmade, cold process, artisan bar.
Scent and ingredient: lavender, oatmeal, shea butter. Only list ingredients that are really in the bar.
Gift angles: gift for her, hostess gift, teacher gift, stocking stuffer, soap gift set.
Use: guest bathroom soap.

None of them repeats the title word for word, so together they cover more of what a buyer might type.

What to leave out

Skin-condition claims. Phrases about treating eczema or acne can cause trouble with marketplaces and regulators. Say what the soap is and what is in it.
Other brands' names.
Words that are not true, such as "vegan" or "natural" unless your ingredient list backs them up.
Plurals of a tag you already have. Some sellers say Etsy matches root words, so "soap" and "soaps" don't need two slots. We haven't tested this ourselves.

Gift season

If you sell soap sets, swap one weak tag for a gift phrase that fits (stocking stuffer, hostess gift). Take seasonal phrases out in January. See the holiday listing refresh and the tag rules guide if Etsy rejects one.
