Etsy tag not accepted: why it happens and how to fix it
If Etsy refuses a tag, it is almost always one of four things: too long, a character that isn't allowed, a duplicate, or a leftover from a bulk upload. Etsy can change its rules, so check Etsy's own seller help page on tags as well. This guide reflects what Etsy's help page and seller-tool help pages said when we last checked, in October 2026.
1. The tag is over 20 characters
Each tag can be up to 20 characters, and spaces count. "small leather wallet" is exactly 20 and works. "slim minimalist wallet" is 22 and does not.
Fix: cut a word or swap it for a shorter one. "slim minimalist wallet" becomes "minimalist wallet" (17) or "slim wallet" (11).
2. The tag has a character Etsy doesn't allow
As Etsy's help page describes it, tags can contain letters, numbers and spaces. An apostrophe (') or a hyphen (-) is allowed inside a word, but a tag can't start with one. Things that commonly cause trouble:
- Ampersands (&), slashes, commas, brackets and other punctuation
- Emoji and decorative symbols
- A leading apostrophe or hyphen
Fix: write it as plain words. "salt & pepper shakers" becomes "salt and pepper set" (19). "mother's day gift" is fine because the apostrophe sits inside a word.
3. The same tag appears twice
A duplicate wastes a slot. Etsy can also flag it.
Fix: replace the second one with a different angle: recipient, occasion, style, material or use.
4. It came in through a bulk upload or a connected tool
Print-on-demand and listing tools push tags to Etsy for you. Printful's help pages say that when some tags are invalid, Etsy skips those and applies the valid ones. So a listing can end up with fewer than 13 tags without any loud error.
Fix: open the live listing on Etsy after any sync and count the tags that actually saved. Edit the ones that are missing.
A quick pre-save check
- 20 characters or fewer, spaces included
- Only letters, numbers and spaces, with any ' or - inside a word
- No duplicates
- No other brand's trademarked name
- 13 tags in total
One tip: you don't need plurals
Printify's seller guidance says Etsy matches tags by root word, so "candle" and "candles" are treated alike. We haven't tested that ourselves, but it is a good reason to spend your 13 slots on different phrases instead of singular and plural versions of the same one. See the tag limit guide for how to use all 13.
Want it done for you?
The Listing Rewrite Pack writes 13 tags for each of 5 listings, each meant to be 20 characters or fewer, with the count shown next to every tag. The counts are written by AI, so check any tag at 19 or 20 characters before you save it. It is AI-generated, so you review it before you publish. See a sample.
