Do you have to disclose AI-written Etsy listing descriptions?

This is a common question, so here is what we can and can't say. We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice. Etsy can change its policies, so read the current pages yourself before you rely on any of this.

What we found

Etsy's Creativity Standards set out what can be sold on Etsy and how items must be made, designed or sourced. As we read them, they are about the items you sell, not the wording of your listing. We have not found an Etsy rule that requires you to label a listing description, title or tags as AI-assisted. If you find one, trust Etsy's page over ours.

The standards do matter if AI is involved in making or designing the item itself, such as AI-generated artwork on a print. That is a different question from using AI to write copy. Read Etsy's current Creativity Standards and seller policy pages for that case.

Your responsibility doesn't change

Even if disclosure isn't required for copy, you are responsible for what your listing says.

• Check every fact. AI tools can add a material, size or claim you never gave them. A buyer who reads one thing and receives another is the one who asks for a refund (common AI listing mistakes).
• Check every tag. Each tag must be 20 characters or fewer, and AI tools often miscount (tag not accepted).
• Avoid other brands' names. Trademarked and character names can slip into AI output.
• Avoid claims you can't back up, especially health or safety claims on soap, candles and cosmetics.
• Make it sound like you. Read it aloud and change anything that doesn't.

Privacy: what you paste into any AI tool

How we handle it
